Curriculum

preschool students drawing

We want our students to develop a life-long love of learning. To do that, we have work hard to ensure our preschool and pre-kindergarten curriculum aligns with Avon's elementary curriculum. This means our students will be ready to learn once they enter kindergarten in Avon Schools.

All Indiana Department of Education Early Learning Standards are embedded into activities over the course of the school year. More information regarding the pre-reading and social-emotional learning curriculums can be found below.

Fundations

Fundations is a curriculum designed to make learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy.

We adopted this curriculum to give our youngest learners a strong foundation on which to build through their entire experience in Avon Schools and beyond. This tried-and-true, research-based program emphasizes:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics/word study
  • High frequency word study
  • Reading fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension strategies
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling

Second Step

Second Step is designed to help young learners succeed.

Children learn best when they feel safe and when they develop the ability to listen, pay attention, regulate their behavior, and get along with others.

According to Second Step, "When students enter kindergarten with the self-regulation and social-emotional skills taught with evidence-based Second Step Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), they’re set up for success."

At White Oak, we will help our students develop skills and concepts like:

  • How to learn
  • Empathy
  • Emotion management
  • Friendship skills
  • Problem solving
  • Transitioning to kindergarten

Visit the Second Step website to learn more about the program.
